    FAQ

    W-4 Withholding — quick answers

    What is a W-4 form?+

Form W-4 tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. You file it when you start a job or when your financial situation changes.

How many allowances should I claim on my W-4?+

The current W-4 (2020 and later) no longer uses allowances. Instead you enter dollar amounts for credits, other income, and deductions to fine-tune withholding.

    Should I claim 0 or 1 on my W-4?+

The allowance system was removed in 2020. On the current W-4, leaving Step 2-4 blank results in standard withholding for your filing status. Add extra withholding in Step 4(c) if you want a larger refund.

How do I fill out W-4 for married filing jointly?+

Select 'Married filing jointly' in Step 1(c). If both spouses work, use the IRS Two-Earner Worksheet or check the box in Step 2(c) and split adjustments between both W-4s.

When should I update my W-4?+

Update your W-4 after marriage, divorce, having a child, buying a home, starting a second job, or any event that significantly changes your tax liability or deductions.
